where have you gone, simon pagenaud?

 arton5002.jpg

Well, Simon Pagenaud deserves a ride in single-seaters. He should race in GP2. (Can’t believe I am saying this) Or even in the IRL, as much as I do not like the merger. He showed lots of promise last year in Champ Cars (RIP). Dear potential sponsors, help him get a ride.

an ode to champ car if champ car was a person

listen to the song here

(yes, i like obscure music but i feel it’s better to pinpoint the mood in what happened to CC and auto racing in the past five years)

The Statistics “Final Broadcast”

Hey there, can’t you find me?
You’re stranded, between stations…

I’m playing songs from all the bands that I love
Because no one ever calls in
And the record’s spinning as the clock is ticking
And I don’t know who is listening

We’re pausing, station id
I’ll backsell, if you pay me

I’m playing songs from all the bands that I love
Because no one ever calls in
And the record’s spinning as the clock is ticking
And I don’t know who is listening

And this will be my final broadcast
You could say we’re switching formats
I’m signing off for one last time, so thanks…

auto racing just got a lot suckier

Next up: blatant bias by the media and Robin Miller, as well as douchebaggery by Penske and Ganassi, and boring NASCAR domination at 11.

Well, time to watch ALMS. If it’s ever on TV.

champ car is not having the best day ever

The Champ Car World Series has had a pretty decent offseason so far, with stability and the addition of Laguna Seca being main factors here, as well as their competitor, the IRL, struggling for air with drivers like Scott Sharp, Dario Franchitti and others leaving (the Helio Dancing with the stars thing is really a gimmick that won’t last, just like Danica). But the TV schedule just came out and it looks like ESPN/ABC wants to play hardball and screw the pooch by giving a blowjob to the IRL.

A lot of same day delays and 1 hour race reviews. Screw you ESPN. Blowing Champ Car off for an inferior racing series that no one outside of Indianapolis watches with the IRL is not good for open-wheel racing, period.

Also, Champ Car driver Dan Clarke is moving to the IRL with this to say, on Autosport:

“The IRL is one of the few series where drivers can get paid and you can work your way up. Sam Hornish started at Panther and moved to Penske, Ryan Briscoe has been around for a few years and now he’s landed a Penske drive too.” (Autosport)

Yeeeeeah. He’ll start his career at Panther and end up at NASCAR with Wood Brothers/JTG or something. Then again, another Dan Clarke-like moving chicane J.J. Yeley has a ride in NASCAR so it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary.

we miss you andrew ranger :(

Come back to Champ Car! (yeah, I know, he won’t come back from the swirling black hole that is NA$CAR)

auto racing is a sport’s season racing review

So, I need to move down that post I have about Bristol. It is kind of dickish.

Anyways, I’ve been busy with college (first time out of my basement in years!), but that doesn’t mean I don’t update this thing.

Ok, I don’t.

Let’s see what happened while I was away.

NASCAR

Tim Richmond won the championship!

Just kidding, he didn’t, we have the most boring repeat champion ever in Jimmie Johnson. He keeps too much of a low profile.

quick news from around the racing world like kyle signing to JGR, etc

Kyle Busch signs with Joe Gibbs

Looks like JJ Yeley will get the shaft here as JGR is not currently looking at expanding to four teams (maybe it’s because of the pending switch to Toyota here). Kyle Busch will race the 18 and probably will be as much of an outspoken dick as Tony Stewart except Tony’s actually fun to listen to.

Maybe he can make Kyle a fun personality. Kyle Busch should listen and learn from this video of what Tony did to Jeff Gordon in 2000.. that was funny.

More Graham Rahal, all the time

Graham Rahal is getting more coverage these days as a rising star. Being from Ohio, I’d love to see him in F1 someday. He’s very consistent, even with Bourdais as a teammate. Maybe we could see him pair up with Marco Andretti at Newman-Haas Lanigan because Marco’s career is going nowhere but upside-down in the corrupt IRL (although it feels more likely that Justin Wilson may be his new teammate in 2008).

More corn for (less) people

Looks like the IRL will get a milti-year deal for the Iowa Speedway… meaning when Honda leaves the IRL for NASCAR in 2009.. (everyone knows it will happen) this contract means nothing.

weekend race review aug. 10-12

NASCAR at the Glen

The COTs damninated the weekend as Tony Stewart wins, after Jeff Gordon runs out of talent spins with 2 laps to go. The most interesting incident was when Martin Truex pushed Juan Montoya (a racing incident) into Kevin Harvick in turn 1, resulting in an interesting confrontation that will be overplayed in the NASCAR lifestyle shows and Sportscenter’s Ultimate Highlight.  Harvick won the Busch race, which was rather boring, while ex-Tide Rider Travis Kvapil won the Craftsman Truck race.

Champ Car at Road America

Sebastien Bourdais dominates the race this time, marking his first win at Road America. While Dario Franchitti flips and while Danica ignores her tires at Kentucky, IRL Gomers still think Champ Car is boring because of this race… maybe they aren’t intellectual enough. Like Sawyer Brown said, “They don’t understand.” It was highlighted by a crash in lap 1, turn 5, involving Simon Pagenaud, Paul Tracy, and Ryan Dalziel as well as the two title contenders, Robert Doornbos and Will Power having problems.

Franck Perera won the Champ Car Atlantics race. Maybe we’ll see him in the Champs come 2008 or 2009 when we see more cars (hopefully).

ALMS at RA

Roger Penske and his DHL team with Romain Dumas and Timo Bernhard got the overall win at Road America.

weekend race schedule/preview august 10-12

That’s my last IRL post for a while – unless they find a way to attention whore again by a spectacular, stupid crash that always happens or by Danica winning, then yeah (refer to previous post). Anyways let’s check out the other racing action this weekend (times from tvracer.com).

Champ Car at Road America – The Generac Grand Prix

Race at Sunday, 3PM, ABC.

With Robert Doornbos cutting the points lead down to 10 points on Sebastien Bourdais, it should be fun to watch as they battle through the long Road America circuit. There’s also always the possibility for rain. Unfortunately, with the Nextel Cup circuit racing at the same time (even if the race is on network TV), there won’t be that many people watching, sadly. Next year there will be. I’ll probably watch both. I hope Justin Wilson in the CDW car wins.

NASCAR at Watkins Glen/Nashville

Craftsman Truck at Nashville: Saturday, 6:30PM on Speed
Busch Series at the Glen: Saturday, 3:30PM on ESPN2.
Nextel Cup at the Glen: Sunday, 2:00PM om ESPN

The travelin’ honky-donks are back and they are turning left and right this time at Watkins Glen. It’s one of the few races in NASCAR I watch in full these days, but with NASCAR dumbing down their sport with the ugly COT for no reason other than cost-cutting so the larger teams could make more profits and the overuse of draft-track, I’ll watch more of the Champ Car race. I wish qualifying wasn’t canceled, because they could have qualified the cars out of the top-35 to see who makes the race. I wanted to see Boris Said. Maybe he’ll replace Jeremy Mayfield or something. Oh well. It will still be fun to watch Fellows, Carpentier, Robby Gordon, Juan Pablo, and others to battle it out, and I hope Juan Pablo wins.

ALMS at Road America

Sunday, 2:30PM on NBC

The American LeMans Series is now an escape plan once the IRL fails, their top teams, Andretti-Green, Penske, Rahal, and Fernandez are all in the ALMS (while Ganassi, Vision, and Cheever, even if he doesn’t race in the IRL anymore, are in Grand Sham). ALMS is still fun to watch though, because the Audis still dominante, so some things never change.

Here’s to a good racing weekend to y’all.
